Mormon Lake is the largest natural lake in Arizona, though its size and even its presence as a lake can change with the seasons. During droughts it often shrinks to a fraction of its usual size, and it can even dry up completely. The Forest Service manages the lake within the Flagstaff Ranger District of Coconino National Forest, about 2.8 miles from Dairy Springs Campground. The lake has an excellent overlook where you can often see wildlife and birds across its landscape. A small resort on the western shore offers rentals for mountain bikes, horses, snowmobiles and cross-country skis in season. The Mormon Lake Lodge, a famous cowboy steak house with log walls bearing the brands of local ranches, is also nearby. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs around 75°F in June to about 78°F in July, with lows near 51°F. Winter highs there average in the low 40s. Dairy Springs Campground and Double Springs Campground sit close by, and their developed campsites are linked to hiking trails that lead to panoramic overlooks of the lake and surrounding area. Mormon Mountain and the Ledges are both about 3 miles away.
