Heflin is a moderate out-and-back hike in the Shoal Creek Ranger District of the National Forests in Alabama, just outside the town of Heflin. The trail runs about 3.7 miles one way, so the full trip covers about 7.3 miles. The route starts near 980 feet and stays within a modest band of elevation, dipping to about 900 feet at its low point and topping out around 1,200 feet. Expect roughly 400 feet of climbing one way and close to 970 feet of gain over the full round trip, with the same amount of descent. The ups and downs are mostly gentle, but the steepest pitch comes around mile 2.2, where the grade reaches about 17 percent. Horses are not allowed on the trail. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Heflin show April highs around 73°F with lows near 46°F, and October is similar at about 74°F by day and 48°F at night. The Pinhoti Trail passes just 0.2 miles away, and Mountain Street offers another hike about 2 miles off. For time on the water, Snake Creek is a canoeing option, and High Rock Lake offers fishing, both within about 5 miles.
