Chequamegon National Forest

Chequamegon National Forest spans nearly 800,000 acres across northern Wisconsin, offering a mix of woodland trails, lakes, and dispersed camping opportunities typical of Lake Superior's south shore region. The forest supports fishing in numerous lakes and streams, hiking and backpacking on maintained trail networks, and scenic driving through mixed forest landscape. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall and winter months. The area experiences four distinct seasons, with summer and early fall offering the most accessible conditions; winter brings snow and cold that limit some activities but enable cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for prepared visitors.
