About History of a Heath Bald: Guided High Elevation Hike (Craggy Gardens Visitor Center - Milepost 364)

What is a heath bald? How do they form, and how do they change over time? Explore these questions and learn about the history of the Craggy Gardens area of the Blue Ridge Parkway with a ranger. The Craggy Gardens area is known for its spectacular rhododendron displays in early summer and showcases an environment unique to the Southern Appalachian mountains. The Craggy Flats Trail is a 1.2-mile round-trip, moderate hike up to a heath bald with a gradual incline. The trail surface is natural with rocks, roots, and uneven terrain. Inclement weather is possible and the trail may be slick underfoot.

You must wear closed-toed shoes appropriate for a trail walk. Please bring water and rain gear in case of a turn in the weather. If there is light rain, the hike will continue if everyone is sufficiently prepared. In the event of thunder or other dangerous conditions, the hike will be canceled.

From the National Park Service.
