Shafter

Shafter is a ghost town in Presidio County, Texas, carrying the name of General William R. Shafter, a military figure who once commanded nearby Fort Davis. The town's identity has long been tied to mining, and that connection has continued into recent times — as of 2012, at least one mine, La Mina Grande, had been reopened by Aurcana Corporation, and later that year James Bay Mining Company announced it had acquired the Shafter Silver Mine from Aurcana.

Despite that industrial activity, Shafter registers as a ghost town. The 2000 Census counted only 11 residents, according to the Texas Attorney General's Office. Visitors come for the sense of a place frozen between past and present — a remote Presidio County landscape where a once-active community has largely faded.
