Castolon

Tucked along the Rio Grande inside Big Bend National Park in southwestern Texas, Castolon is a tourist ghost town that has carried several names over its history, including La Harmonia Ranch and Campo Santa Helena. The site dates to 1901, when Cipriano Hernandez first settled here, farming the land and constructing what would become the oldest surviving structure on the property — a building now called the Alvino House, originally built as the Castolon Store.

Visitors today find a historic settlement preserved within the national park, where the Alvino House still stands as a tangible link to the community's earliest days. The Rio Grande setting adds a dramatic backdrop, and the remote character of the location gives the site a genuine sense of the past.

Access is via Big Bend National Park's road network. The desert climate means spring and fall are generally the most comfortable seasons for a visit, while summer heat along the Rio Grande can be intense. Winter is mild but occasional cold snaps are possible.
