About Millville

Tucked inside Apple River Canyon State Park in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, Millville is a ghost town with a story shaped by water — both the river that drew settlers and the flood that erased them. The community was established in 1835 and formally platted in 1846, but a catastrophic flood in 1892 wiped it from the landscape entirely.

Visitors who make the trip should know upfront: nothing physical survives. No foundations, walls, or structural traces remain above ground. What you find instead is a state park setting where the town once stood, recognized for its historical significance by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places as the Millville Town Site in 2003.

For history-minded travelers, the draw is the layered story of a place that existed, thrived briefly, and vanished — all within living memory of the 19th century. The park itself provides the access point and context for the visit.
