Hale

Hale is a ghost town in Carbon County, Utah, sitting at 7,598 feet elevation just east of Scofield Reservoir. It began as a coal mining camp, part of a cluster of similar operations in the area that included the nearby communities of Scofield and Winter Quarters.

Visitors today will find the site substantially altered by the reservoir, whose waters now cover the upper portion of the former town. What remains is a high-elevation, partially submerged townsite rather than a collection of standing structures or intact ruins.

At nearly 7,600 feet, the area sees significant winter weather, making access realistic only in the warmer months. The scenic reservoir setting offers photographic interest, but anyone coming specifically for ghost town exploration should know upfront that much of Hale lies beneath the water.
