About Manti-La Sal National Forest

Manti-La Sal National Forest spans 498,506 acres across southeastern Colorado, offering diverse high-elevation recreation from 8,000 to 12,953 feet. The forest encompasses stunning alpine terrain with dramatic peaks, pristine mountain streams, and expansive meadows ideal for backpacking and mountaineering. Well-maintained trail systems range from easy day hikes to challenging backcountry routes, while multiple developed campgrounds provide convenient base camps for exploration. Winter transforms the forest into a backcountry skiing and snowshoeing paradise, with access to high-altitude snow from November through April.

Fishing enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities in the forest's network of streams and lakes, particularly for cutthroat and brook trout. The forest supports extensive trail networks for horseback riding and mountain biking on designated routes. Dispersed camping is widely available throughout the forest, offering solitude and flexibility for backcountry-oriented visitors. The scenic byways, including portions of the La Sal Loop, provide dramatic views of the Uncompahgre and San Juan mountain ranges.

The Norwood and Paonia Ranger Districts manage distinct recreation zones. Winter recreation centers on backcountry skiing and snowshoeing in alpine basins, while fall and spring offer excellent conditions for hiking with fewer crowds. The forest's high elevation means afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months, and many higher trails remain snow-covered through June. OHV access is available on designated roads and trails, supporting off-road recreation alongside traditional wilderness pursuits.
