Elkhorn

Tucked into the Elkhorn Mountains of southwestern Montana, Elkhorn is a Jefferson County ghost town that traces its roots to a 19th-century silver industry that once drew settlers to this remote corner of the state. Today the census-designated place registers a population of just 12, making it one of the quieter footnotes on any Montana map.

Two of Elkhorn's original buildings have survived the decades and are preserved as Elkhorn State Park, giving visitors a tangible link to the town's past. Beyond those protected structures, the surrounding landscape is the main draw — a quiet, historic setting that rewards photographers and anyone curious about Montana's frontier era.

The site is accessible by passenger car, so no special vehicle is required to make the trip. That said, Montana winters are serious, and the mountain roads serving Elkhorn can become hazardous or impassable from late fall through early spring. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable window for a visit.
