Deerlodge National Forest

Deerlodge National Forest spans nearly 769,000 acres across western Montana, offering a mix of timbered valleys and open ridges typical of multiple-use public land. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, and fishing in streams and alpine lakes. Hunting is popular during fall seasons, and scenic driving along forest roads provides access to viewpoints and trailheads. Horseback riding and wildlife viewing are common pursuits.

The forest is most accessible from late spring through early fall, when snow clears from higher elevations and roads are passable. Winter transforms the landscape and closes many routes, though some lower-elevation areas remain accessible. Most visitors plan trips between June and September when weather is stable and the full range of trails and camping areas are open.
