About Castle Gate

Castle Gate is a ghost town in Carbon County, eastern Utah, sitting roughly ninety miles southeast of Salt Lake City. It began as a mining town and takes its name from a striking natural feature nearby: two sheer sandstone walls flanking the Price River at the mouth of Price Canyon. Travelers approaching this narrow corridor see the rock faces open outward like an enormous gate — a dramatic introduction to the site.

What draws visitors today is largely that geological spectacle and the historical curiosity of a community that once thrived here and has since faded. The setting along the Price River canyon remains the primary reward for anyone making the trip.
