About Woolsey Peak Wilderness Area

Woolsey Peak Wilderness Area spans nearly 65,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Arizona, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive country—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. The landscape offers opportunities for hiking and backpacking across undeveloped terrain where solitude and Leave No Trace ethics are the foundation of a visit.

Access is by foot only. There are no maintained trails or developed facilities within the wilderness; navigation and self-sufficiency are essential. Water and seasonal conditions vary widely across the area. Spring and fall typically offer the most favorable conditions, though the Arizona desert climate means temperatures can be extreme in summer and freezing in winter. Plan accordingly and come prepared for a genuine wilderness experience.
