Wild River Wilderness

Wild River Wilderness spans 24,033 acres across the New Hampshire backcountry, a federally protected wilderness area managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive, non-motorized terrain—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel of any kind. It's a place for backpackers and hikers seeking genuine solitude and backcountry immersion.

The wilderness offers classic northeastern hiking and backpacking across undeveloped forest and ridgeline country. Access is by foot only, and the experience demands self-reliance: you'll navigate by map and compass, camp without facilities, and carry out everything you carry in. Leave No Trace principles aren't suggestions here—they're the law and the ethic that keeps the place wild.

Season runs roughly May through October, with summer and early fall offering the most reliable conditions. Winter is possible for those equipped for snow travel, but spring mud and winter snow demand experience and preparation. Plan ahead: this is genuine wilderness, not a park with maintained trails and ranger stations.
