Wheeler Peak Wilderness

Wheeler Peak Wilderness is a 19,154-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in northern New Mexico, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry open only to foot travel and non-motorized use—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. This is genuine wilderness: expect solitude, rugged terrain, and the responsibility that comes with Leave No Trace travel.

The area is ideal for hiking and backpacking. You'll find alpine and subalpine character typical of high-elevation New Mexico country. Access requires trailhead hikes from surrounding national forest lands; there is no road access into the Wilderness itself. Summer and early fall are the primary seasons, though snow and winter conditions close or severely constrain travel from late fall through early spring. Bring a map, compass, and solid backcountry skills. Water sources and camping spots exist but require advance planning—this is not a developed or marked destination.
