Upper Buffalo Wilderness

Upper Buffalo Wilderness is a 12,058-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Arkansas, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves a primitive backcountry landscape where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the land. The area is closed to motorized vehicles, bicycles, and mechanized travel of any kind—it exists to offer solitude and a genuine wilderness experience to those willing to travel on foot.

Visitors should expect strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles. Camping, when permitted, must follow wilderness regulations: no developed facilities, no fire rings, and pack-out-all-waste rules. Access points exist, but there are no maintained roads into the Wilderness itself. Spring through fall offers the most reliable visiting conditions, though weather and water levels vary seasonally. Come prepared for self-sufficiency; this is untracked backcountry where route-finding and wilderness skills matter.
