About Uncompahgre Wilderness
The Uncompahgre Wilderness encompasses nearly 99,000 acres of remote high-country terrain in southwestern Colorado, centered around the dramatic peaks and alpine basins of the San Juan Mountains. This rugged landscape features numerous 13,000+ foot summits, pristine cirque lakes, and deep valleys carved by glaciation, offering serious backcountry adventurers a true wilderness experience with minimal development and excellent solitude. The terrain ranges from accessible alpine meadows and gentle lake basins to technical scrambles and exposed ridge traverses, providing options for varied skill levels while maintaining the wilderness character throughout. Access is primarily via trailheads on the periphery, requiring significant effort to reach the interior, which preserves the primitive experience and limits crowds even during peak season.
