Tuxedni Wilderness Area

Tuxedni Wilderness Area is a 5,712-acre federally designated Wilderness in Alaska managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This remote backcountry preserve is closed to motorized travel, mechanical transport, and road development, preserving a primitive landscape accessible only on foot or by non-motorized watercraft.

Visitors come here for backpacking and hiking in genuine solitude, with the understanding that services, trails, and infrastructure are minimal or absent. The wilderness character means you navigate rugged terrain, manage your own route-finding, and rely entirely on self-sufficiency. Access typically requires water transport or bush travel from coastal areas, and the journey demands backcountry experience, sound judgment, and full Leave No Trace discipline.

Alaska's short summer season—roughly June through September—offers the only practical window for travel, when weather windows open and water routes become passable. Winter conditions render the area extremely challenging and inaccessible to most visitors. Plan for variable coastal and alpine weather, pack accordingly, and come prepared for isolation and self-reliance at a high level.
