Turtle Mountains Wilderness Area

Turtle Mountains Wilderness Area spans nearly 182,500 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a true wilderness—meaning no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. The landscape is primitive and remote, offering backpackers and hikers genuine solitude and a chance to experience untracked terrain far from development.

Visitation here means embracing non-motorized travel on foot or horseback, with no established trail system guaranteed. This is a place for experienced backcountry travelers comfortable with navigation, self-sufficiency, and Leave No Trace principles. Water sources are sparse in much of the area, and weather can be severe, particularly in winter months.
