About Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness

Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness is a vast, federally protected Wilderness Area spanning nearly 647,000 acres in Alaska. The landscape is remote and rugged, shaped by glaciers and coastal geography typical of Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest and alpine terrain. Access is by water or air only—there are no roads, and motorized travel is prohibited throughout the entire area, preserving the primitive character essential to Wilderness designation.

Visitors come here primarily to backpack, hike, and experience genuine solitude in an undeveloped backcountry setting. Wildlife viewing and photography are also common draws. Because this is a federally designated Wilderness, all travel must be non-motorized, and visitors must practice Leave No Trace ethics—pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the landscape's pristine condition.

Access is challenging and requires planning. Most visitors arrive by floatplane or boat charter from nearby towns, and travel within the wilderness is on foot or by kayak. The Alaska summer season—roughly June through September—offers the most reliable weather and longest daylight, though conditions remain unpredictable. Winter and early spring are generally inaccessible due to snow, ice, and extreme weather. Come prepared for wet conditions, difficult terrain, and isolation; this is backcountry travel requiring solid wilderness skills and self-sufficiency.
