Thousand Lakes Wilderness

Thousand Lakes Wilderness is a 16,526-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in California, managed by the Forest Service. It protects a primitive backcountry landscape where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed infrastructure are prohibited. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in genuine solitude, far from roads and the machinery of modern recreation.

This is a Leave No Trace environment where self-reliance and respect for the land are not suggestions but the foundation of the experience. There are no maintained facilities, no motors, no bikes, and no shortcuts—only foot travel through wild country. Access is by foot only, and the season is limited by snow and weather. Spring and early summer snowmelt, combined with high-elevation terrain, means planning around seasonal conditions is essential.
