Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness Area spans over 30,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in North Dakota. This is true wilderness—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through primitive terrain, seeking the solitude and immersion that only a non-motorized wilderness can offer.

Access is foot-traffic only. Plan to arrive prepared for self-sufficiency: carry water, navigation tools, and supplies. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces, and respect the landscape's fragility. The wilderness operates under strict National Park Service management to preserve its undeveloped character for backcountry users.
