Sylvania Mountains Wilderness Area

Sylvania Mountains Wilderness Area is a 19,489-acre federally protected wilderness in California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive backcountry—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in genuine solitude, away from development and vehicle access.

The wilderness demands adherence to Leave No Trace principles. Water sources, campsites, and trails show the impacts of human use even in protected areas, so pack out all waste, camp only in designated areas where they exist, and travel lightly. Access points and seasonal conditions vary; check with the BLM before your trip, as high-elevation terrain can be snow-covered in winter and early spring, limiting when backcountry travel is practical. This is a place for experienced wilderness travelers who understand and respect the regulations that preserve it.
