Sycamore Canyon Wilderness

Sycamore Canyon Wilderness is a 58,450-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and undeveloped landscape are the draw.

The wilderness is accessible only on foot or horseback; no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and be entirely self-sufficient once in the backcountry. This is genuine wilderness travel, not a maintained trail system—navigation and wilderness skills are essential.

Season and access depend on local weather and water availability. Spring and fall typically offer the most stable conditions for backcountry travel in the region. Winter can bring snow and cold at higher elevations, while summer heat is a serious consideration. Plan ahead, bring adequate water, and check current conditions with the managing Forest Service office before your trip.
