About Spice Run Wilderness

Spice Run Wilderness is a 6,037-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in West Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry characterized by rugged terrain and forest cover typical of the Appalachian region.

The wilderness offers hiking and backpacking for visitors seeking non-motorized backcountry recreation and solitude. No roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—the area is managed to preserve its wild character and requires visitors to travel on foot and follow Leave No Trace principles.

Access is on foot only from trailheads on the wilderness boundary. Spring through fall offer the most reliable conditions for travel, though weather in the highlands can be variable. Winter brings snow and ice that may complicate backcountry navigation. Come prepared with map, compass, and self-sufficiency; this is true wilderness with minimal infrastructure.
