About South Baranof Wilderness

South Baranof Wilderness spans over 315,000 acres of remote, undeveloped backcountry in Alaska, managed by the Forest Service as a federally designated Wilderness Area. The landscape is primitive and rugged, accessible only by foot or water—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted within its boundaries.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to explore this isolated terrain. Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: limited trails, challenging navigation, and genuine solitude. The area demands self-sufficiency and backcountry skill. All travel must follow Leave No Trace principles, and visitors are responsible for their own safety and environmental impact.

Access is difficult and typically requires water transportation or chartered floatplane service to reach trailheads. The Alaska wilderness season is brief; summer months offer the most reliable weather and longest daylight, though conditions remain unpredictable. Winter presents severe hazards and is not a practical visiting window for most recreationists. Plan ahead, prepare thoroughly, and respect the primitive character that defines this protected landscape.
