Signal Mountain Wilderness Area

Signal Mountain Wilderness Area encompasses 13,543 acres of federally protected backcountry in Arizona, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive country—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. The wilderness preserves a landscape of solitude and undeveloped terrain open to foot travel only.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the area. You'll travel on foot through remote backcountry, carrying what you need and following Leave No Trace principles throughout your visit. This is genuine wilderness: expect minimal trail infrastructure and plan accordingly.

Access and timing depend on desert conditions. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for extended trips, while summer heat and winter cold both present challenges. Water sources and exposure are critical planning factors in this arid environment. Come prepared for self-sufficiency and solitude.
