Sierra de las Uvas Wilderness Area

Sierra de las Uvas Wilderness Area protects over 13,000 acres of primitive backcountry in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally designated Wilderness. This is non-motorized terrain where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to move through the landscape. You'll encounter classic desert and semi-arid terrain typical of the region—expect rugged topography, limited water sources, and solitude. Access is by foot only; no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted under Wilderness rules.

Visiting means committing to Leave No Trace principles and self-sufficiency. Bring adequate water, navigation tools, and physical conditioning suited to remote desert terrain. The best visiting window is spring and fall when temperatures moderate; summer heat and winter conditions can be severe. You'll need to arrange access from nearby public lands or trailheads outside the Wilderness boundary, as no developed infrastructure exists within it.
