About Sheep Ridge Wilderness

Sheep Ridge Wilderness is a 9,316-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in North Carolina, managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motorized access, mechanical travel, and developed infrastructure are prohibited—visitors come on foot or horseback only, following strict Leave No Trace principles.

The wilderness offers hiking and backpacking for those seeking solitude and untrammeled forest experience. There are no roads or maintained trails infrastructure within the designated area, so travel requires route-finding skills and self-sufficiency. Camping is allowed, but all use must follow wilderness regulations: no fires in sensitive areas, pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and respect the land's primitive character.

Access is on foot from trailheads outside the wilderness boundary. Spring through fall offers the most favorable conditions, though weather and seasonal stream crossings vary. Winter can bring snow and cold; spring can be wet. Come prepared for true backcountry conditions—this is not a marked-trail experience, but rather a place where the landscape itself is the primary draw.
