Semidi Wilderness Area

The Semidi Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 125,000 acres of remote backcountry in Alaska, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as federally protected Wilderness. This is untracked, roadless country where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited—you move by foot, paddle, or packstock only. The landscape is rugged and wild, suited to backpackers and hikers seeking genuine solitude far from developed access.

Visiting means embracing true wilderness conditions. There are no maintained trails, no ranger stations, and no established infrastructure. Access typically requires air charter or boat to reach the perimeter, after which all travel is self-supported and Leave No Trace ethics are both the rule and the only management tool. Alaska's short summer window (June through September) offers the most feasible conditions; shoulder months are possible but bring longer darkness and unpredictable weather. Winter travel is severe and only for experienced arctic expeditioners. Plan conservatively, carry detailed maps, and be prepared for weather that can change rapidly in coastal Alaskan terrain.
