San Gabriel Wilderness

San Gabriel Wilderness is a 35,738-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are core to the experience.

The wilderness follows strict federal regulations: no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all waste, and respect the land's wild character. This is genuine backcountry—expect to navigate by map and compass, carry all water and supplies, and encounter minimal infrastructure.

Access requires foot travel only. Plan for the high-desert and mountain environment typical of the region, with seasonal water availability and weather variability. Spring and early summer are generally optimal for visits, while winter conditions can make travel hazardous and certain areas inaccessible. Obtain current conditions and permits from the Forest Service before heading in.
