Salt River Canyon Wilderness

Salt River Canyon Wilderness is a 32,121-acre federally protected Wilderness Area managed by the Forest Service in Arizona. The area preserves primitive backcountry characterized by rugged canyon terrain and remote landscape where visitors experience genuine solitude far from roads and development.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this wilderness. Access is foot-traffic only—no motorized vehicles, mountain bikes, or mechanized travel are permitted. The wilderness rules are strict and non-negotiable: you must practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out everything you pack in, and respect the area's designation as a non-motorized, primitive backcountry zone.

Visiting requires self-sufficiency and careful planning. There are no maintained facilities, services, or marked trail systems within the wilderness itself. Access points and trailhead logistics require advance research, and seasonal conditions—particularly winter weather and water availability—significantly affect when the area is safely passable. Spring through fall represents the practical visiting window, though conditions vary year to year.
