Salt Creek Wilderness Area

Salt Creek Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 10,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in New Mexico, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As a designated Wilderness Area, it is open only to non-motorized, primitive travel—no roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted.

The area offers hiking and backpacking opportunities for visitors seeking solitude and an untrammeled backcountry experience. Access is by foot only, and all travel must follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the wilderness character. Overnight camping is permitted but subject to wilderness regulations, meaning no established campsites or infrastructure—you camp where you are and pack out everything you bring in.
