Sabinoso Wilderness Area

Sabinoso Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 22,000 acres of primitive backcountry in New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally designated Wilderness. The landscape offers solitude and non-motorized recreation in an undeveloped setting where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary pursuits here. Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: no maintained trails, no facilities, and the full responsibility that comes with backcountry travel. This is a Leave No Trace environment where all impact is your own to manage and mitigate.

Access requires advance planning and self-sufficiency. There are no developed trailheads or services within or immediately adjacent to the area. Spring through fall offers the most viable visiting window, though weather and water availability will shape your trip schedule. Come prepared with map, compass, water knowledge, and the skills to navigate and camp responsibly in primitive terrain.
