About Russell Fjord Wilderness

Russell Fjord Wilderness is a 348,196-acre federally protected wilderness area in Alaska, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is a mix of rugged coastal terrain, glaciers, and dense forest typical of Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest ecosystem. This is true backcountry: there are no roads, no motorized access, and no mechanized travel allowed. All movement is by foot, boat, or other non-motorized means.

The wilderness offers solitude and remote hiking and backpacking for visitors prepared for Alaska's coastal conditions—steep terrain, wet weather, and tidal considerations. Wildlife viewing and photography are common draws. Access is by boat or floatplane, as the area has no road connection. The season is brief; summer months (June through September) offer the most stable weather and longest daylight, though conditions remain cool and wet. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace ethics and self-sufficiency; this is untracked, primitive country with no facilities or maintained trails.

Winter travel is possible but demands serious backcountry skills and glacier experience. Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with unpredictable weather and shorter days. Plan for isolation: help is distant, and weather can trap visitors for days.
