Rough Mountain Wilderness

Rough Mountain Wilderness is a 9,327-acre federally protected wilderness area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. It offers genuine backcountry solitude for hikers and backpackers willing to travel on foot through primitive terrain without the convenience of roads, motorized access, or mechanized travel.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Rough Mountain operates under strict non-motorized rules. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and move through the landscape without trace. There are no developed facilities, maintained trail systems, or modern infrastructure; what you find is untrammeled wild country. Access is typically via foot from adjacent National Forest lands, and conditions vary seasonally. Spring and fall offer moderate weather, while winter can bring snow and difficult travel. Summer brings heat and humidity but the longest daylight for extended trips.
