Rocks and Islands Wilderness Area

Rocks and Islands Wilderness Area is a 5-acre federally protected wilderness in coastal California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This small, primitive backcountry space preserves a landscape where rock formations and island terrain dominate, offering visitors a chance to experience undeveloped coastal wilderness away from roads and development.

The wilderness is open to non-motorized recreation including hiking and backpacking, though the compact size means visits tend toward shorter explorations rather than multi-day trips. Like all federally designated Wilderness Areas, motorized vehicles, mechanical equipment, and road development are prohibited—the defining feature of wilderness recreation is self-reliance and a commitment to Leave No Trace principles. Visitors should come prepared for primitive conditions with no facilities, water sources, or maintained infrastructure.
