Roaring Plains West Wilderness

Roaring Plains West Wilderness is a 6,794-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in West Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is backcountry terrain suited to foot travel and primitive camping—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted within its boundaries.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. The area offers the kind of solitude and untracked character that defines a true wilderness setting. You'll move through the landscape on foot, carrying what you need, and camp without developed infrastructure.

Visitors must follow strict Wilderness rules: stay on foot, pack out all waste, camp lightly, and leave no trace of your passage. There are no motorized vehicles, mountain bikes, or mechanical equipment allowed. Access depends on trailheads outside the Wilderness boundary; check with the Forest Service for current conditions and entry points. Spring through fall are the most practical seasons for backcountry travel here.
