About Rich Hole Wilderness

Rich Hole Wilderness is a 6,532-acre federally protected wilderness area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. It offers a genuine backcountry experience for hikers and backpackers seeking solitude in primitive terrain. The area is closed to all motorized and mechanized travel—no vehicles, mountain bikes, or other powered equipment are permitted. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp only in designated areas or at least 100 feet from water sources, and stay on established routes where they exist.

Access requires foot travel only, and the wilderness character means minimal infrastructure or trail maintenance. Spring and fall offer pleasant conditions, while summer can be warm and humid. Winter snows may limit access and require appropriate gear. Plan ahead with maps and knowledge of current conditions, as this is true backcountry where self-reliance is essential.
