Ramseys Draft Wilderness

Ramseys Draft Wilderness is a 6,577-acre federally protected wilderness area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through undeveloped terrain, seeking the solitude and self-reliance that true wilderness offers.

Recreation is foot-powered only: hiking day trips and backpacking expeditions are the primary activities. There are no facilities, trail maintenance guarantees, or modern amenities—you navigate, camp, and travel as in traditional backcountry. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and respect the wilderness character that the federal designation protects.

Access requires shuttling from nearby trailheads outside the wilderness boundary. Spring through fall are the practical seasons; winter snow and icy conditions make travel hazardous. Plan for self-sufficiency: bring map and compass or GPS, water treatment, and the skills to move safely through unmarked or lightly marked terrain. This is a place for experienced backcountry users who embrace the reality of true wilderness.
