Rainbow Mountain Wilderness

Rainbow Mountain Wilderness is a 4,591-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Nevada, managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry hiking and backpacking in a landscape shaped for non-motorized travel only.

This is genuine wilderness: no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. You'll find solitude and the kind of isolation that comes with foot travel through undeveloped terrain. The place operates under strict Wilderness rules, which means you're expected to travel lightly, camp responsibly, and follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out everything you pack in, camp at least 100 feet from water sources, and avoid social trails that lead to erosion.

Access requires hiking in from an established trailhead; there is no vehicle access into the Wilderness itself. Spring and fall offer moderate conditions, though seasons vary by elevation and exposure. Winters can be harsh and impassable depending on snow. Come prepared for self-sufficiency: water sources, weather, and navigation are your responsibility.
