About Raggeds Wilderness
Raggeds Wilderness encompasses 64,346 acres of rugged backcountry in the Elk Mountains of central Colorado, offering solitude and pristine alpine terrain for experienced wilderness travelers. The area features a complex network of high ridges, cirque lakes, and steep drainages with elevations ranging from 8,000 to over 12,000 feet, creating diverse ecosystems from montane forests to alpine tundra. Classic wilderness objectives include the Ragged Peaks themselves and numerous backcountry lakes accessible via established trails and cross-country routes. This remote designation means no motorized access, minimal infrastructure, and a genuine backcountry experience requiring map and compass skills, self-sufficiency, and strong Leave No Trace practices.
