About Raccoon Branch Wilderness

Raccoon Branch Wilderness is a 4,226-acre federally protected wilderness area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, roadless setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience. As a designated Wilderness Area, it operates under strict non-motorized rules—no vehicles, motors, or mechanized travel of any kind are permitted. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the land's undeveloped character.

Access requires foot travel only. The area is best visited during warmer months when weather is stable and trail conditions are reliable. Winter conditions can make travel difficult and hazardous. Plan for a true backcountry experience: bring a map and compass or GPS device, be prepared for self-rescue, and understand that no amenities or maintained facilities exist within the wilderness boundary.
