Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area

Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area spans over 118,000 acres of remote backcountry in southern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally protected Wilderness. This is primitive country—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through undeveloped terrain, experiencing genuine solitude far from developed infrastructure.

The wilderness follows strict non-motorized rules. All travel is on foot, and backcountry camping is allowed under Leave No Trace principles. Access points typically require a drive to trailheads on public or adjacent land, then entry on foot. The landscape is arid high-desert terrain typical of the region, best visited during cooler months when water and shade are critical planning factors.
