Pond Pine Wilderness

Pond Pine Wilderness is a 1,692-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in North Carolina, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry characterized by the natural forest and wetland ecology of the coastal plain region. Visitors come primarily for hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and untrammeled nature are the draw.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Pond Pine operates under strict federal protection: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and self-regulate their impact. Access is foot-traffic only, and the experience is defined by remoteness rather than developed amenities or marked infrastructure. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions for backcountry travel, though the coastal plain can be wet and buggy during warm months. Winter weather is generally mild but unpredictable in North Carolina.
