Pocosin Wilderness

Pocosin Wilderness is an 11,802-acre federally protected wilderness in North Carolina managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and untracked terrain are central to the experience.

Visitors should understand the wilderness rules that define the area: no roads, no motors, and no mechanized travel of any kind. This is true backcountry—you'll be on foot, carrying what you need, and responsible for leaving no trace. Access requires self-sufficiency; there are no services, facilities, or maintained infrastructure within the wilderness boundary.

The landscape is predominantly pocosins—evergreen shrub thickets and pocosins flatwoods typical of the North Carolina coastal plain. Expect dense vegetation, wet understory, and slow-going terrain. Hiking here rewards patience and navigation skill rather than high mileage. Spring through fall is the practical window; winter and early spring bring wet conditions and limited daylight.
