About Piute Mountains Wilderness Area

Piute Mountains Wilderness Area spans over 50,000 acres of protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally designated Wilderness. The landscape offers primitive terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude away from roads and development.

Visiting means embracing true wilderness rules: no motorized vehicles, no mechanized travel, and no maintained infrastructure. All travel is non-motorized and foot-powered. Leave No Trace principles are not just encouraged—they are the standard of conduct in any federally protected Wilderness Area. Pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly across the land.

Access is backcountry only. There are no roads or trailheads with services inside the Wilderness boundary. Seasonal conditions, water availability, and weather shape when trips are feasible. Spring and fall can offer moderate conditions; summer heat and winter cold and snow present real hazards. Plan accordingly, carry water, and check conditions with the BLM before heading out.
