About Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness

Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness is a 46,757-acre federally protected wilderness in Southeast Alaska, managed by the Forest Service. The area encompasses a largely roadless landscape where creeks, salt chuck waters, and surrounding forest characterize the terrain—a remote backcountry setting where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited.

Visitors come here to backpack, hike, and seek solitude in genuine wilderness conditions. Access is by water or foot only; there are no roads into the area. Recreationists should expect wet, challenging terrain typical of Alaska's Inside Passage region and be fully self-sufficient. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and understand that this is primitive country with minimal infrastructure or rescue services nearby.

The best window for travel is summer and early fall, when weather and water conditions are most stable. Winter conditions make the wilderness inaccessible to most visitors. Plan ahead, know your skills and limits, and respect the wilderness regulations that keep this landscape protected.
