Peters Mountain Wilderness

Peters Mountain Wilderness is a 4,520-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry, open only to non-motorized travel on foot or horseback. There are no roads, no motors, and no mechanized equipment allowed—this is true wilderness where you travel as humans have for centuries.

The area offers hiking and backpacking for those seeking solitude and an untracked experience. Visitors should come prepared for self-sufficiency; there are no facilities, marked trails, or developed infrastructure. All travel follows Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp below treeline where permitted, and leave no trace of your passage.

Access is on foot from adjacent national forest land. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions, though weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Winter travel is possible but requires winter skills and preparation. Come here to disconnect from the modern world and experience backcountry on its own terms.
