About Pahute Peak Wilderness Area

Pahute Peak Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 57,000 acres of remote, primitive backcountry in northern Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as federally protected Wilderness. The landscape is rugged and untracked, with no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel allowed—this is genuine backcountry where you travel on foot or horseback and camp beneath the open sky.

The area offers backpacking and hiking for those seeking solitude and self-reliance. There are no developed trails or infrastructure; travel is route-finding across wild terrain. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and respect the wilderness character that makes the place valuable. Mechanized travel, mountain bikes, and motors are prohibited by law.

Access is limited and requires advance planning. The nearest services and trailheads lie some distance away, and seasonal snow and weather can affect passability. Summer and early fall are the most reliable windows for travel. This is a place for experienced backcountry users comfortable with navigation, self-sufficiency, and the commitment to travel lightly and leave no trace.
